Sociology

Sociology is the study of society.  Sociologists are interested in explaining why society works the way it does and the extent to which our behaviour, experiences and life chances are shaped by our social class, age, gender and ethnicity.

KS4

Sociology GCSE improves student understanding of society and human behaviour. Sociologists study society by asking questions and conducting research. It is an engaging, academic subject that will interest students who want to study ‘contemporary history’ (the very recent past) as well current day society. Students study the classical Sociologists, important research studies, Marxism, Feminism, Functionalism, Interactionism and the New Right. Crime, Education, Family and Social Stratification are all studied.

The course is assessed via two examinations at the Year 11. Each exam is one hour and forty five minutes long. Paper 1 covers Family, Education and Methods in Context. Paper 2 covers Crime, Social Stratification and Methods in Context.

You will study:

  • Education with Theory and Methods (paper 1)
  • Families and Households (paper 2)
  • Beliefs in Society (paper 2)
  • Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods (paper 3)
  • Students will sit 3 x 2 hour papers at the end of the course
