Mathematics is a vital, compulsory subject for all students up to GCSE. Not only is it viewed as a necessary subject by most employers, colleges and universities; studying Mathematics has substantial benefits.

We all use Mathematics every day, most of the time without realising. We check our change in the shops, work out how expensive a new car may be or where our next holiday is going to be. We use time to decide when we need to leave the house to get to school or work and to plan our days. Basic Maths skills are invaluable when checking mortgage statements, gas/electricity bills and bank statements.

Maths problems help to train your brain to think accurately and carefully. You will be able to think more logically, and to make better decisions in your life.

At the more advanced end of a Mathematical career, we have scientists using their Mathematics to design faster computers, provide a more responsive Internet, invent gaming consoles and programme mobile phones.  Financial Mathematicians are able to create more efficient pension schemes, mortgages and saving schemes. Statisticians use their knowledge to guide insurance renewals for car, house and life cover.

At The Highfield School we aim to make Maths lessons as interesting and engaging as possible so that students can become independent and lifelong learners.

The better you are at maths the easier you will find Science, Design Technology, ICT, many aspects of Geography and even Music!

Mathematics Learning Journey

KS3

The curriculum in Key Stage 3 follows a mastery curriculum. Students are continually assessed within the lesson as well as through homework tasks and will have a formal assessment at the end of each term. We have embedded problem-solving, numeracy and retrieval practise into the curriculum. In each of the 2 years there are resources to cater for the whole range of ability, including the use of manipulatives where appropriate. A number of activities, including the use of ICT and investigational work, are included to provide a comprehensive curriculum.
